A Day to Remember- Common Courtesy Review

After several lawsuits with Victory Records, A Day to Remember has finally released their fifth album, entitled Common Courtesy on October 8. This pop punk/post-hardcore band from Ocala, Florida has gained much popularity over the years because they have been able to blend metalcore elements with catchy pop punk melodies to make the songs supposedly sound more interesting and “hardcore”. Prior to Common Courtesy, the only ADTR album I have listened to was Homesick, and I thought that it was a decent album and somewhat enjoyable, although saturated with mundane breakdowns and cheesy lyrics. Common Courtesy, on the other hand, is a complete mess of an album, and fails to interest me at all. From the first to the last track, the album was so boring and repetitive that there were multiple times when I almost fell asleep listening to it.

My biggest gripe with Common Courtesy is that each song lacks its unique identity, and everything sounds so similar to each other. Although ADTR attempted to blend metalcore elements into their pop punk music, screaming a few lines here and there and tangling in a generic breakdown doesn’t do anything to improve the music, and get so tiresome to listen to after a few times. Every time they try to go metalcore, they use the exact same, simplistic breakdown that just sounds terrible and makes me cringe. Most of the time, this band stays true to their roots stays pop punk, but they keep recycling the same melodies so that each track sounds almost identical. This album is fundamentally flawed in that it is so bloated with the same substance and everything is dumbed down to such a simplistic degree. There is barely any variation in the guitars and the vocals. In order to try to avoid this repetitive aspect, instead of mixing in different styles and innovating, they just add a few acoustic songs here and there to try to change the mood of the album, but it doesn’t work because those acoustic songs sound identical and generic as well! I simply do not see any talent at display here, as neither the vocals nor the instrumentals is outstanding or appealing. Homesick suffers from the same issue too, but at least songs like “The Downfall of us All”, “NJ Legion Ice Tea”, and “Homesick” have their own individual identity and are outstanding to a certain degree. They tried to go all out metalcore in the lead single, “Violence”, but only succeeded in making one of the most boring tracks in this genre. The breakdowns in this song sound awful, and I just don’t see any effort put to make this at least somewhat standout.

The lyrics on this album are no better than the music, and exhibit the same blandness and lack of depth. Many of the songs center around ADTR’s early days as a band. Although the lead singer, Jeremy McKinnon is writing from his personal experiences, these lyrics have no depth to them, and he keeps on repeating the same themes. I feel like this is written by someone who is already dried-up of ideas, and is still forcing and squeezing water out of a dry towel, or by someone who is simply striving for mediocrity.

Unfortunately, I can’t see any talent or effort exhibited in Common Courtesy. Everything on this album is just so bland and mediocre, I don’t understand how this is appealing to people. If you’re on the edge about checking this album out, I would highly recommend staying away from it, or you will be as disappointed as I am.
