I See Stars- New Demons Review

I See Stars is back with their fourth album, entitled New Demons. The album was released on 10/22/2013, via Sumerian Records. It seems that they have been working quite diligently over these past few years, as it has only been one a half years since the release of their previous album, Digital Renegade. Although many people did not like that album, I enjoyed it a lot, and I thought it had many standout tracks such as “Gnars Attacks”, “NZT48”, “Digital Renegade”, and “Filth Friends Unite” (check out the music video). With New Demons, they have changed up their sound a lot, and it sounds quite different from Digital Renegade. I believe that New Demons is a progression from Digital Renegade, as it incorporates many more elements of electronic music, and the tracks seem much heavier and interesting.

New Demons blends the mix of electronic music and metal music very well. Although ISS attempted to do that in prior albums, the electronic elements would often feel awkward and forced, and sound somewhat out of place. In this album, the integration of different electronic music such as dubstep, drum and bass, and even house music is amazing. In New Demons, the electronic elements feel like they are actually part of the music. This might be due to the assistance of many electronic producers like Celldweller, who are specialists at incorporating electronic music. You can really tell a difference from their previous works when you listen to tracks such as “Boris the Animal”, “Judith Rules”, and “Murder Mitten”. The album kicks off with an incredibly awesome intro called “Initialization Sequence” that follows off with a great beat that leads into the first song, “Ten Thousand Feet”. I thought that it was a cool way to start  the album, and “Ten Thousand Feet” was a great opening track as well, showing off Devin’s expanded vocal range as well as some unique background electronic music. I believe that ISS has found the middle ground between electronic and metal music, as no longer does these two genres interfere with each other, but instead flow with each other smoothly. It is both dubstep and metal, and I believe that both fans of dubstep or metal will absolutely enjoy it. Some of my favorite songs off the album are “Ten Thousand Feet”, “New Demons”, “Violent Bounce”, “Murder Mitten”, “Boris the Animal”, and “Judith Rules”. One concerning aspect about New Demons is that Devin’s voice sounds higher than how it does in their previous releases, and I dearly hope that he will be able to reproduce the same tonal quality live.

Lyrics on this album are really nothing groundbreaking. Of course, you wouldn’t expect them to write something absolutely mindblowing like what you might see in Between the Buried and Me or Cradle of Filth, but I feel like these lyrics are very down to earth, and come from their real life experiences. Although they might not be extraordinarily profound or sophisticated, you can tell that these guys are actually putting in hard work and actual effort in their songwriting, and I will give them credit for that. From “Boris the Animal”, “Who do I answer to when my blood thins out like twine? Always searching for myself at the bottom of a bottle, I won’t be hard to find.” Additionally, many songs, such as “Murder Mitten”, contain significant meaning and story behind them, so even though these lines aren’t the most artistically composed, I still appreciate them for what they are and what they represent.

For an electroniccore/electronic metal album, this album is fantastic and achieves a lot of what was setting out to do. There’re not that many bands in this small niche, and I hope that I See Stars is able to break through with this album. Many fans of their previous albums might not appreciate New Demons as much, because it’s less catchy and harder to sing along, but this is electronic metal done right. This is what an amalgam of the two genres should sound like, and you can tell that ISS has put in hard work in this album to produce this sound. I would highly recommend this album for fans of dubstep, metalcore, or just want to explore new and interesting music.
